Stock help
« on: October 17, 2017, 09:07:12 PM »
Hi guys.

Im thinking of going Mbuna in my 4ft tank (after much deliberation) as I like an active tank and going to keep the natural behavior a go.

Im leaning towards a Soulosi tank with maybe a small group of something else to add a bit more colour, maybe red top hongi or similar. What sort of numbers are we talking in a tank this size. This is around 76Gallon display with a 18Gallon sump.

Thanks  :thumbup

i started with 18 in my 90g.( 4 males 14 females i think) but lost at least 7 to bloat a few weeks after i got them. two of the males were killed off. 2 males and 9 females worked very well fpr me until recently. although ive heard you shouldnt keep two males. maybe im an exception, but i prefer to stock lightly.

IMO, the RT Hongi would be too aggressive for the Saulosi.  I would either try Rustys, or White Labs.

You could go williamsi north blue lips for something different the male goes super orange with blue lips and the females go olive green with blue lips

Thanks Mike,

They do look nice and like you say a little different. I like the blue of the msobo too so might get a small group of something with blue males or maybe a small group of acei

Am I mad to consider demasoni guys?

I was thinking of adding 20 juvi's and letting them "fight it out" to a smaller group and settle along with a group of Yellow Labs and 3/4 aceis?

I had read they are very aggressive to there own kind.

They do look great! Wondering if it will be hard to distinguish males and females when the time comes as they are very similar. Think I will definitely go yellow labs as like the blue and yellow contrast.

if you like the yellow and blue contrast id just go with msobo or saulosi. that way you achieve the look you want, while leaving more room for fish.

Right guys im going to go for the follow stock, just need to decide on soulosi or msobo:

20 x Msobo / Soulosi
4 x Williamsi North Blue Lips (aim for 1m 3f long term)
4 x Ndumbi Super Red Tops (aim for 1m 3f long term)

I just cant decide on msobo or soulosi. I have read that in a 75G there is more chance of more males fully colouring up rather then one coloured msobo with sub doms not quite as much.

Can anyone advice?

Thanks :)

i think tank size is one of several variables that will determine your males coloration. i think lay out(scape), male to female ratios, water parameters all play a role. i have 2 males in my 90g, with maybe 120lbs of stone. they both show solid color most of the time.

I think I'm going to go msobo and hope for a couple to colour up. Went to my lfs today who had some msobo and although I will not get them from there I will get them from a breeder they looked great.
