A 13gal is very limiting, even more so for African Cichlids.  The only African Cichlids I would recommend would be Tang Shellies.
75gal   W/T Haras, Met. Membe Deep, and Kawanga Golds
60gal   Ps. Saulosi (1M and 9F) and 1 lonely OB Peacock.

Not to bad. I think you can get away with some shell dwellers. Although not sure how much your daughter will be into them? What about a planted shrimp tank?

Multies or maybe some gold occies they're  shell dwellers that only grow 1.5 inches very interesting fish the way they're constantly moving shells and sand that's the multies I have could have around 6 2 male 4 female  in your tank the occies are different  as they are super aggressive so maybe 5, 1 male 3 female they not that cheap either so prob start with multies and when you get to many can sell them off and go into the occies that's what occies look like

OK thank you everyone for the quick feed back I have set my mind on tanganyikan shell dweller's probably multis or similius but the question I have now is these shell dwellers will mostly be on the bottom is there any free swimming tanganyikan fish that will compliment them in the 13 gallon.

Just have shells hanging with fishing line so the shells are in the middle of tank height.. Kinda like shell condominiums.. ?     :thumbup

Go for the multis they are great little fish to watch. Mine use all the tank levels in a 60 liter tank.

Personally I think a 13 gallon is only suitable for fry when it comes to any African Cichlid in my humble opinion
