Zebra Pleco with malawi's??
« on: November 11, 2016, 06:06:40 PM »
Anyone ever kept a zebra pleco with mbuna and peacocks? Or know if they are compatible?

I know many people keep plecs with their fish but was unsure about this species......it's a lot of money to spend if it's not going too work out

I have kept different sizes of common plecos with many types of Africans successfully.  Just choose not too anymore because I want algae and to keep the theme geographically correct.

No matter how many times you wash a bird it will still smell fowl..

Thanks

I have always wanted to keep my tank lake specific and only Africans aswel....... but I always get algae on my rocks and prefer the clean look

I have four mbuna in the tank but they don't seem to eat much off the rocks

from what ive read zebra plecos arent good for algae eating. a bushy nose would be more practical in your case. zebra plecs arent as resilient as bushy nose imo. its an expensive gamble. i personally wouldnt do it.

I agree with Bandicoot, zebra plecos are not that good with algae.  They prefer more meat then other plecos.
A BN is better, but even then you must feed the BN  veggy tabs too.

If you a wanting a cleaning crew your best bet is a whip tail catfish they're pretty hardy and eat more algae than most common plecs and only grow to 15 to 20 cm at most

Yes I want something to keep the algae off my rocks as I've got some very large ones and their a pain to clean

I manage to keep my nitrates and phosphates low now and I have nerite snails but it still continues to grow, I have got marine lighting though so that's probably the cause

Thanks guys I didn't realise the zebra wasn't a good cleaner...... il look into the whip tail

marine lighting is definitely the problem. if you dont want algae growth changing the light would make a big difference.
