Introducing large Jack Dempsey to mostly mbuna tank?
« on: September 09, 2016, 06:48:15 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 75-gallon tank in my office with 14 cichlids and one pleco at the moment. I had 20 at one point but have lost a guy here and there over the past year. The largest fish is about 6 inches long and the smallest about 3 inches. I believe most are mbuna, but some might not be. For example, I have a few jalo reef and a bright blue johanni and also a badass-looking livingstoni.

A friend of mine is selling his house and has a 500-gallon half-round tank with 5 LARGE oscars and a beautiful Jack Dempsey. He's offered me the Dempsey which is about 7-8 inches. Gorgeous bright blues and greens.

Thought I'd ask the hub for advice. Would it work? Is the tank too small? Would the Dempsey gobble up any of my current cichlids. Should I not risk it?

Thanks!
Dan

i wouldnt do it for a variety of reasons.
1. tank is much too small.
2. water parameters are like night and day.
3. diet is completely different.
4. a fish that size will eat your smaller mbuna.

i dont want to come across like a dick, its just that imo theyre not compatible, especially in a 75g tank.
im not a mixed tank guy, i dont even like mixing mbuna with peacocks and haps.
in the end its up to you, but i dont think it would be a good decision.

It's what I needed to hear. I'm sold. I figured as much, just needed some opinions.

Thanks!

Maybe offer to take it off his hands if he throws in his 500G tank off his hands for $200.  :p

Put the JD in your smaller tank - and give your cichlids (almost) almost unbounded new territory to subjugate and rule over.

(Works for me)
