your opinion please! how I stocked my new 40 gal
« on: July 28, 2016, 07:22:49 PM »
Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum :) have kept various tropical fish for years and finally started an African cichild tank! I want to have a tank with one of each species...
This is a 40 gallon tank, it has a very rocky landscape with tons of hiding spots and a few plants
This is how i've stocked the tank so far
2 socolofi, 1 red zebra, 1 yellow lab, 1 acei and 1 jewel. These are juveniles and unsure of sex
How do y guys think this will work?
Oh there are 3 danios in there too
Can I add anything more?

ok first things first. i wouldnt add anything else. youre already over stocked. most if not all your fish will out grow a 40g. typically a 55g is considered the minimum size for malawi. what are you running for filtration?

Bandi is correct.  All of those Cichlids are a little too big for a 40gal.  The Jewel maybe OK, but the others grow too big.  The Acei can grow to 7".

With those species (because the males and females look so much alike), that would be an ideal all female tank (except that the Acei grow too big).
75gal   W/T Haras, Met. Membe Deep, and Kawanga Golds
60gal   Ps. Saulosi (1M and 9F) and 1 lonely OB Peacock.

as those fish grow you are going to need to increase filtration. africans are like gold fish. they produce a lot of waste. they require a lot more filtration and water movement than youre used to having with your community set up.
